OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the effectiveness of an integrated package of health sector interventions to decrease the burden of chronic lung disease in Vietnam through COPD/asthma interventions and smoking cessation interventions.

VCAPS SERIES OF SUB-STUDIES:


VCAPS 1

Characterising respiratory symptoms and smoking behaviours within Vietnamese health care system

DURATION: 9 months (July 2017 – March 2018)

PARTICIPATING PROVINCES/CITIES: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ca Mau, Thanh Hoa

OBJECTIVE: To obtain evidence that will contribute to an understanding of acute and chronic respiratory disease and smoking practices among patients presenting to health facilities including prevalence of COPD and asthma, tobacco use. It will also evaluate the current approaches to management of chronic lung disease and smoking within the health system and health related cost for patients.


VCAPS 2

Characterising chronic lung disease management and tobacco control within health facilities in Vietnam

DURATION: 9 months (July 2017 – March 2018)

PARTICIPATING PROVINCES/CITIES: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Ca Mau, Thanh Hoa

OBJECTIVE: Explore the current practices and attitudes regarding tobacco control and COPD/asthma management within multiple levels of the health system.


VCAPS 3

An integrated public health strategy to manage chronic respiratory disease and reduce smoking in three District Clinics in Vietnam: a prospective cohort study

DURATION: 24 months (July 2018- July 2020)

PARTICIPATING CITY: Hanoi

OBJECTIVE: The present study (VCAPS 3) will serve as a pilot study for a randomised controlled trial (VCAPS 4, a cluster RCT) that aims to show the effectiveness of an integrated public health intervention to reduce the number of exacerbations among patients with symptomatic CRD. The results of the two surveys and this pilot study will inform the design of the VCAPS 4 RCT.


VCAPS 4

An integrated public health strategy to combat COPD and asthma in Vietnam: a cluster randomised trial

DURATION: Tentatively 36 months (February 2019 – December 2021)

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the effectiveness of an integrated package of health sector interventions to decrease the burden of chronic lung disease in Vietnam.
